Can You Replace a Roof in Colorado in October or November?

Short answer: Often, yes — on the right days. GAF recommends installing asphalt shingles at 40°F or above, because colder shingles lose flexibility and may crack, and the sealant strips need warmth to activate. In cooler weather installers must hand-seal each shingle. Here is what that means for timing your Colorado roof replacement.

Hail season has mostly gone quiet, but roofs don't stop needing work in October. The honest answer to "can I replace my roof this late in the year?" is: often yes, but it depends on the day, and it depends on how the crew handles the cold.

What do manufacturers say about installing shingles in cool weather?

GAF's published guidance is specific: "The official GAF recommendation is to install shingles at temperatures that are at least 40°F/4°C." Below that, GAF says asphalt shingles "will lose flexibility and may crack." (Source: GAF, "Cool Weather Roofing: Must-Know Tips for Installing Shingles in Cool Temperatures," gaf.com.)

Why does the sealant strip matter?

Each shingle has an adhesive strip that bonds it to the course below. GAF says that strip "needs warmth, sun, and temperatures above 40°F/4°C to activate." When those conditions aren't met, the shingles won't seal themselves, so the installer has to seal them by hand: GAF describes "quarter-sized dabs" of approved asphalt cement under each shingle tab, pressed firmly in place, and warns against too much cement because it can run down the face of the shingle or cause blistering.

What else changes in the cold?

GAF recommends storing shingles at around 70°F for at least 24 hours before installation and bringing smaller amounts up to the roof at a time so they don't cool quickly. It also notes that cooler temperatures can drop air-compressor pressure, so nails can end up under-driven; precision nailing matters. (Same GAF source.)

So when should you replace a roof in Colorado?

A good rule: ask any roofer how they handle days below 40°F, whether they hand-seal, and whether they will tell you to wait. If your roof is leaking or storm-damaged, a repair or temporary protection now plus a spring replacement can be the better call. Free inspection →

Questions to ask any roofer before an autumn replacement

  • "What's your minimum install temperature?"
  • "Do you hand-seal shingles on cool days?"
  • "Will you tell me to wait if the weather isn't right?"
  • "Is the manufacturer's installation guidance followed for the shingle you're using?"
